Sample Quote "At about 12: 11 on Tuesday 4th February 1997 a freight train carrying spoil from railway track renewal work derailed just after passing through Bexley Station, Kent. The train was travelling from Three Bridges, Sussex to Hoo Junction, near Gravesend in Kent, and derailed on Bridge 799 immediately east of Bexley Station as a result of lateral movement of the track on the longitudinal timbers on the bridge and a resultant widening of the track gauge. The two locomotives and the first 11 wagons remained on the track. The 12th wagon remained connected to the eleventh wagon with the rear nearside wheel of the rear wheelset derailed, The train separated to the rear of the 12th wagon. The remaining 7 wagons were completely derailed. This had resulted in substantial damage to the viaduct carrying the track. Four members of the public who were working in or near the arches under the viaduct were injured, and extensive damage was caused to the viaduct and nearby buildings."
