"The Knaresborough branch joins the main line of the York, Newcastle, and Berwick Railway at the Poppleton Junction, which is about one mile and three quarters to the north of York. As the express train from York to Newcastle was passing the Poppleton junction, about five minutes past three on the morning of the 15th instant, it ran through a train of empty coal waggons which was crossing from the Knaresborough branch on to the main line. The express train was eighteen minutes late, in consequence of the lateness of the train from London, and the driver and guard of the coal train appear to have considered that it had probably already passed. There was:not any night pointsman stationed at the Poppleton junction, and the lamp of the distant signal. towards York, although it had not absolutely gone out, was flickering so dimly as to be invisible through the lamp glass."
