"This single line branch, some 89 miles in length, was constructed under the Sheppey Light Railway Order, 1898, and at the level crossing in question, where it intersects Station Road, Minster, there are no gates. As the 6.55 p.m. train from Queenborough was crossing the road, at slow speed, an Austin 7 h.p. saloon car collided with the side of the engine, about 17 feet 6 inches in rear of the leading buffer beam. The train consisted of a two-coach articulated set drawn by a 0-4-4 type tank engine, running bunker first. The weight of the engine and train was about 98 tons, the overall length being 134 feet. The vacuum brake was in operation on all wheels (12) of the coaches and on the coupled wheels of the engine. While the engine and train sustained no damage, the car was swung round parallel with the railway and had its offside completely wrecked, though it did not overturn. In addition to the driver, it was carrying thee passengers. I regret to report that one of the passengers was killed, while the driver and one of the remaining two passengers were seriously injured."
