"The 8.31 a.m. up express, Cambridge to Liverpool Street, running under clear signals at about 50 m.p.h., collided with a motor lorry which was using this crossing; the lorry was wrecked and thrown to one side but its back axle was caught under the engine and apparently derailed one pair of bogie wheels. The train ran on in this condition for some 130 yards until it reached a crossover, when either the derailed wheels or the lorry axle struck the exposed end of the wing rail, and caused complete derailment of the engine and most of the train.
I regret to state that the driver and fireman of the train were killed, while the passenger, the guard, and the lorry driver were injured and had to be taken to hospital; 22 other passengers suffered from minor injuries and shock. Several passengers in the leading coach had almost miraculous escapes as the body of this coach was torn from the underframe and they were thrown out into the gap thereby created."
