"The 10.25 pm. sleeping car express from London to Scotland was running in two portions, which left King's Cross at 10.25 p.m. and 10.32 p.m. on 27th March. In the neighbourhood of Doncaster there was a dense fog; fogmen had been summoned at about 12.30 a.m. but had not reached their posts. The second portion, or 10.32 p.m. train, collided with the rear of the first, between Bridge Junction and South Yorkshire Junction signal boxes. The first portion was gathering speed at the time after a stop some 800 yards further back, at Balby Junction box; this minimised the violence of the collision, the relative speed of the two trains being apparently some 15 or 20 miles an hour.
There were no serious casualties. A passenger in one of the sleeping cars of the 10.25 p.m train complained of shock, as did five Post Office sorters who were at work in a mail van, near its rear end."
