"In this case the 4 p.m. up mixed train from Macduff to Inveramsay...was passing over a bridge carrying the railway across the turnpike road from Inverary to Turriff, at 4.57 p.pm, the superstructure of the bridge gave way with the most distastrous results...the tender remained still attached to the engine, but all the wheels were off the rails to the right-hand side; the drawbar at the back of the tender was broken off, and the leading waggon had run down the bank, and was standing on its wheels in the turnpike road...the third had its leading wheels on the line south of the bridge, and was broken in two halves, the trailing half being among the wreckage on the road below..."
