"Dowdyke Bank Crossing is protected by two 16 foot gates which are normally closed and padlocked across the unclassified road linking the villages of Sutterton and Dowdyke. Shortly before 14.23 the resident female crossing keeper unlocked and opened the gates away from the railway to enable a sewage disposal tanker to pass over the crossing from the direction of Dowdyke towards Sutterton. As the vehicle traversed the crossing at about 5 m.p.h. it was struck by the 13.50 Peterborough to Skegness two-car diesel multiple unit passenger train travelling at approximately 50 m.p.h. The impact hurled the tanker into the side of the crossing keeper's house which was badly damaged and the tanker came to rest approximately 70 ft beyond the point of impact. The train came to a stand approximately 430 ft from the crossing with the leading bogie of the first coach derailed and both bogies of the second vehicle derailed; both coaches were severely damaged.
The sewage disposal tanker was almost totally destroyed and I regret to report that the driver was injured and his mate was killed. The driver and guard of the train were slightly injured, and all six passengers, a railwayman who was travelling as a passenger, and the crossing keeper also suffered from shock or minor injuries."
