"At about 01.45 on the morning of Saturday, 15th November, when the barriers were lowered for the passage of an Up freightliner train, which was travelling at about 70 mile/h, a car, on a journey from London to Stockton and driven by [the driver], was driven round the lowered barrier and onto the crossing, where it was struck by the train and carried about 700 yards southwards coming to rest under Bridge No. 28 which carries the A163 road over the railway. The car was wrecked and [the driver] and his passenger died of multiple injuries."
