Guide to Document Downloads horizontal rule
Downloading our Documents
Our documents are stored on the site in the Portable Document Format (PDF). Links to these PDF files are shown with the following icons:

small document icon - small document (< 1Mb)
medium document icon - medium document (< 5Mb)
large document icon - large document (< 10Mb)
very large document icon - very large document (> 10Mb)

Download Times
Some of our documents are quite large: particularly older documents which we have sourced from image files. For these documents, the download time can be large. The size of each document is listed in Megabytes (Mb). Typical download times are as follows;

56k dialup connection: 8½ minutes per Mb
128k ISDN connection: 4 minutes per Mb
512k broadband connection: 1 minute per Mb

We have optimised the files as best we can - while preserving the readability of the document - but please check the download size and be prepared for longer load times on these files.

Download Options
If you click with your left mouse button on the document download document icon icon, and you have installed Adobe Reader®, the document will open in your browser. This may take some time to appear, depending on connection speed and size of document. If this is the case, the browser window may appear to have "frozen", although this is not the case; the window is simply waiting for the document to complete its download.

A more useful method for larger files is to save the document on your computer and then view it. This can be done as follows:

PC Users
Click with your right mouse button on the document download document icon icon and choose "save target as". You will then be prompted for a location on your computer to store the document; when you have done this, the download will begin and you will be presented with a dialog showing the percentage progress of the download. When the download is complete, you may open the document by double-clicking the resulting file in the normal way, or clicking "open" in the download progress dialog.

Mac Users
Click and hold on the document download document icon icon and choose "download link to disk". You will then be prompted for a location on your computer to store the document; when you have done this, the download will begin and you will be presented with a dialog showing the percentage progress of the download. When the download is complete, you may open the document by clicking the resulting file in the normal way, or clicking "open" in the download progress dialog.
