News accident reports found (by the Archivist)

Well done to Barry Turvin, who has found another Board of Trade accident volume on Google Books. This is no mean feat given Google Books inexplicably bad search tools. This means we have a further 83 reports from 1869 and 1870 in our intray! If anyone else finds BoT accident returns on Google Books we would be very pleased to hear from you.

An Act of Kindness from Colin Marsden (by the Archivist)

A chance encounter with Colin Marsdens book Rail Mishaps last month led me to send a speculative email to Colin. Our web host rolled over to a new version of the software which underpins the site, and some functions which we were using no longer work. The good news is the problems are fixed now. We think!

Newsreel footage added (by the Archivist)

We have now made the final addition to our accident summaries for the time being - embedded newsreel footage. For instance, the Harrow and Wealdstone Accident now has a Movietone news report from the time.

If you are aware of relevant video content for historical accidents on the internet - we don't do footage from recent accidents as it is not appropriate - then please get in touch.

Welcome a new Admin (by the Archivist)

A new admin has made his debut - Derek Deacon is now uploading his first reports. Welcome to the fold Derek and thanks for giving up your time!

RAIB and Wikipedia links added (by the Archivist)

We have just made a change to the presentation of our accident records, to show links to two external websites.

The first is for new accident alerts - we have now added links to the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) accident summary page. This often gives additional details of the accident in advance of report publication.

The second is a link to the Wikipedia article for selected (usually major) accidents. Now, we all appreciate that Wikipedia is written by the, ahem, wisdom of the crowd, and therefore is not always correct. But on balance most of the articles seem to be broadly accurate, and contain useful background information. Where an article falls short, we wont link to it.

If you have any views on this please get in touch.

New - accident image galleries (by the Archivist)

We have made some changes to the way that accident images are stored, to allow multiple images to be attached. For instance have a look at our record for the Moor Street derailment of 2008.

We will be taking care with the images we publish, for two good reasons: one is to do with copyright, and the other is to do with ethics.

However if you have accident images for which you hold copyright and you would be happy for us to use them - attributed of course - then please contact us.

Looking for more volunteers (by the Archivist)

Following the success of our previous appeal for document uploaders, we are now looking for extra helpers to reduce our document backlog. If you have a few hours a month to spare, an internet connection, the ability to understand victorian accident reports, and can fill out a web form, please get in touch.
