"As the Goonbarrow to Fowey Docks freight train approached signal SB1 displaying a green aspect, the driver released the brake and applied some power. The locomotive had by then passed over Prideaux Viaduct and was approaching the Pontsmill siding just north of St Blazey. The driver then felt a tug on his loco and then the brakes automatically applied. The train came to a halt after running on for a further 115 metres. It was found that the 18th wagon had derailed about two thirds of the way across Prideaux Viaduct and had been followed into derailment by most of the next 14 vehicles. The last two vehicles stopped short of the derailment point and remained on the track. The derailed vehicles caused extensive damage to the track beyond the viaduct and some of the vehicles were located close to the top of the embankment, leaning over and in danger of slipping into the river."
