"The collision was evidently caused by the want of care on the part of the driver of the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Company's engine in front of the train of Midland carriages, in running at too high a rate of speed between the goods and town stations at Grimsby.
If the travelling-inspector in the service of the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway Company be correct in the times he stated for leaving the goods station and for the collision taking place, it would appear that the train was run at an average speed of upwards of 24 miles an hour, while the regulations prescribe that the speed is not to exceed 10 miles an hour. But the Railway Companies do not place on their engines indicators to show the rate of speed at which a train is running, it is all guesswork.
In all probability the collision would not have occurred at all if the continuous-breaks on the Midland train had been available for arresting its progress ; and it is, in my opinion, to be regretted that engine-drivers are not prohibited by law from taking on foreign trains on the lines on which they work unless their engines are so fitted as to be enabled to be properly connected with and to make use of the continuous-breaks fitted on these foreign trains."
